Diversity Spotlight Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Aimal @ Bookshelves and Paperbacks. Every week, you come up with one book in each of three different categories:
– a diverse book you have read and enjoyed
– a diverse book on your TBR
– a diverse book that has not yet been released
You can check out Aimal’s announcement post for more information.
Don’t forget to leave a link to your own post in the comments and take some time to check out other people’s posts! 🙂
A diverse book I have read and enjoyed
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Khaled Hosseini is just such a fantastic writer and storyteller. I have already featured A Thousand Splendid Suns in one of my posts here and I can’t wait to finally get around to reading his other novel And The Mountains Echoed.
compelling quote:
“I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”
A diverse book on my TBR
Life Of Pi by Yann Martel
Still haven’t read this one. I’ve seen some underwhelmed reviews in the meantime, but we’ll see…
compelling quote:
“It is true that those we meet can change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards, even unto our names.”
A diverse book that has not yet been released
Swing Time by Zadie Smith
Zadie Smith is without a doubt an important voice of our time. So go put this on your to-read list.
Expected publication: November 15th 2016.
compelling description:
“Dazzlingly energetic and deeply human, Swing Time is a story about friendship and music and stubborn roots, about how we are shaped by these things and how we can survive them. Moving from North-West London to West Africa, it is an exuberant dance to the music of time.”
Especially with the recent discussion about the need for more diversity in literature, I think this is a brilliant meme. Let’s broaden our horizons together and read more diversely! If you participate in the meme, leave me a link to your post in the comments or just tell me about some diverse book you have read or want to read 🙂
#WeNeedDiverseBooks
Khaled Hosseini’s been on my TBR for a looooong time. I already bought some of his books!
Life of Pi was absolutely amaaaaazing, I believe I even handed it 5 stars. Have you seen the movie? I thought it was alright, but the book’s better ^^.

A thousand splendid suns is great 😉
And I’m glad to hear that! I saw some not-so-enthusiastic review recently, so it’s a relief to hear you loved it! And I haven’t seen the movie either yet – I think I want to read the book first 🙂

I happen to have a hardback copy of that one :D. I thought it was magical, but yes, definitely read the book first 😉

I have had Life of Pi on my Kindle staring at me forever! I need to just commit. I am always hearing such wonderful things 🙂 I still need to read The Kite Runner as well. Wow, I am slacking now that I think about it..

I loved Life of Pi when I read it years ago. It’s one that I’d like to re-read sometime.
I also loved The Kite Runner, and would love to get the chance to read one of his other books.

Great picks! Life of Pi is really one of my favorite all time books. It takes a bit to get into, but it’s just pretty wonderful once you get invested. The language is beautiful. I featured Swing Time on my Diversity Spotlight a few weeks ago…I still haven’t read White Teeth, so I might use that to bide my time until it comes out. 🙂

It’s great to hear that! I saw some underwhelmed and not so happy reviews of life of pi recently, so that made me a bit nervous, but now you’re the second person who tells me it’s wonderful 🙂

I’ve read the first two. I found Hosseini gripping, Martel not so much but certainly colourful (as was the movie).

Thank you! It’s so good to hear that, I’ve seen some underwhelmed reviews in the meantime, so I was a bit scared already but now quite a few people have told me they loved it here! 🙂

I think the book is a hit or miss with people, either they really liked it or hated it. I personally thought it was an eye opening read into a culture I don’t know a lot about, which I love learning so it really sat well with me.

It sounds great – I’m really optimistic I’ll like this now! 🙂

The Kite Runner keeps popping into my life at the most challenging times. I find that once it appears I don’t have time to read it, and it frequently alludes my grasp. Perhaps now it will finally be read? I’ve almost *only* heard great things!

Ah, I have books like that on my to-read list as well. I hope you’ll finally get to the Kite Runner now and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts when you do 🙂
