Diversity Spotlight #5: October 13th 2016

Diversity Spotlight Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Aimal @ Bookshelves and Paperbacks. Every week, you come up with one book in each of three different categories:

– a diverse book you have read and enjoyed
– a diverse book on your TBR
– a diverse book that has not yet been released

You can check out Aimal’s announcement post for more information.
Don’t forget to leave a link to your own post in the comments and take some time to check out other people’s posts! 🙂

A diverse book I have read and enjoyed

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini goodreads-badge-add-plus_zpsc94610e9

Khaled Hosseini is just such a fantastic writer and storyteller. I have already featured A Thousand Splendid Suns in one of my posts here and I can’t wait to finally get around to reading his other novel And The Mountains Echoed.
compelling quote:

“I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”

A diverse book on my TBR

Life Of Pi by Yann Martel  goodreads-badge-add-plus_zpsc94610e9

Still haven’t read this one. I’ve seen some underwhelmed reviews in the meantime, but we’ll see…
compelling quote:

“It is true that those we meet can change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards, even unto our names.”

A diverse book that has not yet been released

Swing Time by Zadie Smith   goodreads-badge-add-plus_zpsc94610e9

Zadie Smith is without a doubt an important voice of our time. So go put this on your to-read list.
Expected publication: November 15th 2016.
compelling description:

“Dazzlingly energetic and deeply human, Swing Time is a story about friendship and music and stubborn roots, about how we are shaped by these things and how we can survive them. Moving from North-West London to West Africa, it is an exuberant dance to the music of time.”

Especially with the recent discussion about the need for more diversity in literature, I think this is a brilliant meme. Let’s broaden our horizons together and read more diversely! If you participate in the meme, leave me a link to your post in the comments or just tell me about some diverse book you have read or want to read 🙂

  1. Khaled Hosseini’s been on my TBR for a looooong time. I already bought some of his books!
Life of Pi was absolutely amaaaaazing, I believe I even handed it 5 stars. Have you seen the movie? I thought it was alright, but the book’s better ^^.

  2. I loved Life of Pi when I read it years ago. It’s one that I’d like to re-read sometime.
I also loved The Kite Runner, and would love to get the chance to read one of his other books.

  3. Great picks! Life of Pi is really one of my favorite all time books. It takes a bit to get into, but it’s just pretty wonderful once you get invested. The language is beautiful. I featured Swing Time on my Diversity Spotlight a few weeks ago…I still haven’t read White Teeth, so I might use that to bide my time until it comes out. 🙂
